WAYNE - This fall has been full of new experiences for Giulia Maioli.

Her first-ever venture to America. Her first high school competition. Her first time wearing pink ankle tape.

The 17-year-old from Ravenna, Italy, is studying at Wayne Hills as a foreign exchange student. She arrived in the U.S. on Aug. 28 and, within the first week of school, joined the gymnastics team.

"People told me that to understand the school, I have to do an activity or a sport at that school," Maioli said, her accent posing little hindrance to her fluency in English. "I'm not good at soccer, volleyball or tennis, and I really like gymnastics."

Her first varsity routine came Thursday when the Patriots hosted Wayne Valley in the fifth annual Pink Meet. She scored a 7.2 on the floor, and that was after not having performed in competition since 2012.

"We don't have sports at school; it's really different," Maioli said, noting that her only outlet for gymnastics in Italy was with a club team. …
