WAYNE -- Fourth-seeded Wayne Valley's excellent wide play propelled the Indians to a 5-0 victory over a depleted Pompton Lakes squad in the Passaic County quarterfinals Saturday.

"This is a really important victory," said sophomore forward Randi Smith. "You just want to show who we are and what we can do."

Pompton Lakes' four captains - seniors Carlyn Salus and Angelica Mirrer, and juniors Danielle Jenkin and Mary Dougherty - did not play, but Wayne Valley coach Chip Smith knew the game would be a challenge.

"We knew what they would try to do, and our game plan was to keep it moving down the flanks," Smith said.

From kickoff, Wayne Valley used medium-to-long passes in that area, with fifth-seeded Pompton Lakes attempting to attack Wayne Valley's central defense on the counter.

Ten minutes in, Jenny Eitel made a run and cross from the right side, but Jen Cannarella skewed her shot. Seconds later, the Indians were awarded a penalty for a foul and Randi Smith coolly placed it in the bottom-left corner for Valley's first goal.

The Indians continued to get wide and serve the ball in from the wings, with Kaylee Negast on the left and Brianna Slider and Cannarella on the right.

"Slider's crosses are always good from the right, and Kayley Negast and Jen Cannarella are fast and love to take players on," Randi Smith said.

Smith and Eitel's contrasting styles wrought havoc on the Cardinals' back line. Smith used her speed to roam freely while Eitel proved difficult to overpower on the ball.

Emma Flemming tapped home a cross at the back post to double the lead in the 28th minute. Keeper Daniella Lucca, who had 13 saves, got a hand on the ball but could not keep it out. What was nearly a brilliant save reflected Lucca's skill despite the score line.

"It's too bad that it wasn't a better game, because I think Daniella is the best goalkeeper in the county. …
