Trustee Candidate Will Stay on Ballot

PATERSON - Khader "Ken" Abuassab remains an eligible candidate in next week's city school board election even though officials have determined he does not live in Paterson, according to the Passaic County clerk.

"Absent a court order removing a candidate from the ballot, I have no legal authority to do same at this point," said Kristin Corrado, the county clerk.

But if Abuassab were to win in the election, he likely would face a legal challenge from one of the other candidates, officials said.

After receiving inquiries earlier this month about Abuassab's residency, Passaic County Elections Superintendent Sherine El-Abd conducted an investigation and determined he lives in Little Falls, not Paterson. She notified him of her findings in a letter dated Tuesday.

Abuassab, who was convicted of federal fraud charges 12 years ago, declined comment on Thursday. He is one of eight people vying for three seats on the Paterson Board of Education.

The county clerk said the paperwork for Abuassab's candidacy "appeared to be in apparent conformity," the standard the county uses to review candidate petitions. …
