Fast Start Quick Fix for Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD - How long has it been since the Giants scored a touchdown on their first offensive possession of a regular-season game?

The player who scored that touchdown has since retired from football.

So it's a bit of a trick question, of course, considering the medical circumstances surrounding running back David Wilson's unfortunate departure from the game.

But the fact remains: the last time the Giants reached the end zone on their opening drive was when Wilson danced across the goal line against the Eagles for what turned out to be the final touchdown of his all-too-brief professional career nearly 13 months ago.

Starting fast has been a lost art for Big Blue, from the final days under former offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride and continuing into the new regime headed by Ben McAdoo.

And no place is that more of a must than in Seattle's CenturyLink Field, the stadium widely considered the toughest and loudest in which to play. The Seahawks have lost just twice there the past three seasons.

"We keep working on it and we've certainly been reminded about that fact," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. " 'Start fast' is a phrase we've used for pretty much this whole year, but we don't seem to grasp that. We don't seem to be able to get off to the start we talked about. Each week someone, we all, we keep every stat known to man. We continue to focus on the fact that we don't start fast and we haven't done anything with those first drives and we haven't scored early."

The Giants (3-5) have scored just 14 points in the first quarter all season.

Asked if he was surprised by the numbers detailing his slow- starting offense, Coughlin replied: "Disappointed is a better word than surprised. I'm disappointed. That is not the intent, believe me."

Of the Giants' eight opening drives this season, seven have ended with Steve Weatherford punts. …
