Unproductive Winter Days for Cautious Mets

SAN DIEGO - As the winter meetings near their conclusion, Sandy Alderson notices that business tends to pick up, as teams try to accomplish their goals in the last minutes.

While the Mets have been holding active conversations with teams regarding their three available starting pitchers, they have yet to come close to a deal. General manager Alderson is still optimistic the Mets eventually will be able to find a trading partner.

"I think we're comfortable that we'll be doing something, and it could happen today, it could happen tomorrow, and might be a little later," Alderson said in his daily session with reporters. "We still assess the market and what we think is the value of our players, and try to act accordingly. Sometimes that happens quickly and sometimes it doesn't."

As the Mets continue to tweak their roster, trading a starter is the most pressing issue remaining. Adding a second lefty reliever and righty outfield bats are not huge priorities, and if there's a move to add a shortstop, it likely would come later. Mets brass continues to say it would be fine with Wilmer Flores as the starter in 2015.

Alderson said there's been a "little more activity" regarding a trade of a pitcher, but as Wednesday night, none of the talks had advanced to a serious level. He doesn't believe the Cubs' acquisition of Jon Lester has affected any of the conversations thus far, but that could change if the Giants and Red Sox, who were runners-up for Lester, acquire their secondary options.

A handful of teams reportedly have reached out about Dillon Gee, with Texas being among them. Rockies GM Jeff Bridich told reporters he's talked with the Mets about Gee, as Colorado is looking for pitching help and could have major-league-ready pieces to deal.

Bartolo Colon and Jon Niese are the other two starters on the trading block. …
