Four Local Juniors Start Getting Notice

HACKENSACK -- The winter season of junior year could be the most important season of a varsity boys track athlete's career, especially if he'd like to continue competitive running in college.

It's the time to find out how good you are and to get a peek at how good you could become over the next 16-18 months, the time when potential begins to become achievement. The time for college coaches to start seeing your name as someone to take an interest in.

And four of North Jersey's best juniors showed Saturday at the Tom Zaccone Invitational meet at the Rothman Center, that their names are going to start showing up as runners to watch for the 2014- 15 winter season and beyond.

Sean Sullivan of Rutherford and George Galkin of Wayne Hills met for the first time Saturday with Sullivan holding off Galkin in an outstanding 1,000 meters battle, especially since neither runner had tried the distance before.

"I just approached it as an 800 and try and gut out the last lap," said Sullivan, who won in 2:43.8, less than 3 yards ahead of Galkin. "I saw him making a move [early in the final lap] and I knew I had to go then because I didn't know how good his kick was."

"I was surprised when we pulled away [from the rest of the field] and I tried to just hold my position, but he was too tough for me," said Galkin, running his first full season of indoor track. "He's very good."

Both runners enjoyed excellent cross-country seasons, with Sullivan winning a North 2, Group 2 title and missing a berth in the state Meet of Champions by three seconds and Galkin coming from the junior varsity team to earn All-Passaic honors and finishing 24th in the state Group 3 race. …
