Devils Feast on Buffalo

Article excerpt

NEWARK - The Devils haven't had many winning streaks this season, so they're not about to throw this one back regardless of the opponents.

They put together consecutive wins for the first time in nearly two months with a 4-1 victory over the struggling Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night at Prudential Center.

Patrik Elias had a goal and two assists to reach 1,000 points, making him the 82nd player in NHL history to do so. He got point No. 1,000 with an assist on Mike Cammalleri's clinching empty-net goal with 3:04 left in regulation. His assist on Travis Zajac's short- handed goal in the first period was the 600th of his career, making him the 80th player in league history to reach that number.

Elias, who has played in 1,187 regular-season games, scored his 399th goal in the Devils' three-goal first period as they won two games in a row for the first time since Nov. 11 versus Minnesota and Nov. 14 at Washington.

The Sabres have lost five in a row and are 1-7-1 in their last nine.

The Devils, who began the second half of their regular-season schedule 10 points out of a playoff spot, still are seeking consistency in their game as they continue to adjust to the system changes they've made since coach Pete DeBoer was fired Dec. 26. They were coming off a 5-2 win over Philadelphia on Saturday, however, and continued their offensive surge with a three-goal first period.

Elias gave the Devils a 1-0 lead just 3:44 into the game. He drove to the net to tip Cammalleri's right circle pass between goaltender Jhonas Enroth's pads for his sixth goal of the season. Elias has four goals in his last seven games following a stretch in which he scored just once in 24 games.

Off the faceoff following Elias' goal, Devils defenseman Mark Fraser fought Chris Stewart in a lengthy bout. It was the Devils' seventh fight in the last five games after they had just seven in their first 37 contests. …
