Early in his Friday night concert at Madison Square Garden, Billy Joel welcomed veteran New York disc jockey Jim Kerr (now at Q104.3) to the stage, to talk about what Kerr described as a "unique moment in musical history."

Joel had established a new record for consecutive sold-out performances at the Garden -- 13, in his once-a-month series that began in January 2014 -- and a banner with the number 13 and the phrase "Longest run of a single artist" was raised to the rafters.

Kerr said Joel was breaking his own record, established last month. But he didn't mention that the record will only last until Joel plays the Garden again, in about five weeks. And then that record will last only a month or so, and so on, until at least October, though shows could continue to be added, once a month, for years.

There's no reason why they shouldn't be. Joel has not released an album of new songs since 1993's "River of Dreams," but his voice is holding up well, and he is still capable of being boisterous onstage when the material calls for it. He's 65, but retirement does not seem to be in the cards.

There have been some guest stars at the previous monthly Garden shows, including Sting, John Mellencamp and AC/DC's Brian Johnson. There were none on this chilly January night, though there were some minor surprises, including "Blonde Over Blue" (a little known track from "River of Dreams") and a bit of "Don't Be Cruel" interjected into the song "The River of Dreams" (in honor of the 80th anniversary of Elvis Presley's birth, Thursday). …
