New Jersey's Transportation Trust Fund is running dry, but it still has enough money for a $4.3 million replacement of a train bridge over Overpeck Creek in Ridgefield Park, state Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox said at a news conference Wednesday.

The bridge is nearly 100 years old and handles 25,000 rail cars a year for the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway. Its replacement is part of a local aid program by the state Transportation Department, which doles out $200 million a year for such projects.

The fund paying for that work is $18.2 billion in debt, however, and will run out of money by July 1, Fox has said. That may force Fox to curtail spending well before the July deadline, he said.

It also may make the rail bridge one of the last projects in North Jersey to receive funding before the fund goes broke. Governor Christie and legislative leaders are negotiating a fix that would bring additional revenue to the fund, possibly including a gas tax hike. …
