Former Bank Worker Indicted in $1M Theft

A former Bergen County bank employee was indicted Tuesday on charges of stealing more than $1 million from customer accounts.

Miye Chon, also known as Karen Chon, 34, of Englewood Cliffs was charged with one count of bank fraud and 27 counts of theft, embezzlement or misapplication of funds.

She had turned herself over to the FBI in September and is free after posting a $250,000 bond.

She could face up to 30 years in prison on each count, in addition to fines and restitution, according to the U.S. attorney for New Jersey.

The alleged thefts took place over several years leading up to BankAsiana's October 2013 acquisition by Wilshire Bank of Los Angeles.

Neither Chon or her lawyer could be reached for comment Tuesday.

Chon, who worked in BankAsiana's Fort Lee branch, allegedly stole more than $1 million from customer accounts by making unauthorized transfers from customers' certificate of deposit accounts into BankAsiana's vault account, and then removing cash from the vault. …
