'Fifty Shades of Grey' May Be a 'Girls-Night-Out' Event

Article excerpt

It's Valentine's Day weekend, the perfect time for a great date movie. But one of the biggest releases this week -- the much- anticipated "Fifty Shades of Grey" -- will be more of a "girls- night-out" event.

"I told my best friend this is her one requirement in being my best friend," said Kathleen Schmidt, Glen Rock of going to the movie that officially opens on Friday but has Thursday night show times starting at 8 p.m.

What's Schmidt's interest?

"Pure fascination," she said.

"Fifty Shades of Grey," the novel that dominated book clubs and captured the imagination of millions of women in the spring and summer of 2012, is now a film that will leave much less to that imagination.

"I did recently see a trailer, it looked pretty bad," said Heather Vimba of Ridgewood. "It certainly didn't entice me to go see it, but to be fair, I don't see a lot of movies."

Vimba wasn't a huge fan of the book, either.

"It just was so poorly written," she said. "The story could have been interesting, I think, but it didn't really hold my attention and I don't know if it was the plot or the 'grey eyes' every other sentence."

While her closest circle of friends have no plans to go see it, she does know it is a big deal for many.

"Just from posts on Facebook, I know some people are excited," she said.

Glen Rock's Noreen Heffernan is getting a group of girlfriends together to go.

"I think it's going to be a fun girls night," said Heffernan, who is due to give birth in a month.

Despite enjoying the trailers, she has set the bar low.

"I'm expecting to be disappointed," she said. "I know that's horrible to say. ... I hope it's a good movie, I'm sure it'll be entertaining."

Based on the sales of the trilogy, big box office numbers seemed a sure thing and, before it is even released, that has played out as expected. …
