Mayweather Confirms Bout with Pacman

The fight virtually every boxing fan has wanted to see for five- plus years finally has been scheduled to take place May 2 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Undefeated superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. revealed via social media early Friday night that he agreed to face Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao in a welterweight championship unification fight that night. Mayweather's confirmation ended relentless speculation regarding whether boxing's biggest stars ever would agree to fight.

Now that it's a done deal, experts expect Mayweather-Pacquiao to emerge as the most profitable fight in boxing history.

The long-awaited showdown should shatter boxing's pay-per-view records for overall buys (2.45 million) and revenue ($150 million), even though it'll reportedly cost nearly $100 in HD, $25 more than Mayweather's most recent fights. Mayweather (47-0, 26 KOs), who negotiated a 60-40 financial split in his favor, and Pacquiao (57-5- 2, 38 KOs) are expected to make more than $100 million combined for the scheduled 12-round fight.

Mayweather credited his first face-to-face meetings with Pacquiao last month for allowing them to resolve lingering issues in prolonged negotiations between their representatives. Before they met at halftime of a Miami Heat-Milwaukee Bucks game Jan. 27 in Miami and later that night in Pacquiao's hotel suite, Mayweather and Pacquiao had only personally discussed the fight once, during a brief phone conversation in January 2012.

"I'm glad my decision to meet with Manny and discuss making this fight happen helped get the deal done," Mayweather said in a statement issued Friday night. "Giving the fans what they want to see is always my main focus. This will be the biggest event in the history of the sport.

"Boxing fans and sports fans around the world will witness greatness on May 2. I'm am the best ever, TBE, and this fight will be another opportunity to showcase my skills and do what I do best, which is win. …
