BEST BET: Offshore action for cod, pollock and ling is going to be the best bet in the next few weeks when the weather is good and the party boats get out. Cod up to 20 pounds and pollock up to 30 pounds can be expected to make up the best catches. Striped bass fishing is non-existent at this time as many back bay waters still have ice on them. Winter flounder fishing is open in state waters with a two-fish daily bag limit measuring at least 12 inches. New York waters are closed until April 1.

HOT BAITS: The action on the offshore grounds for cod and pollock will be on clam baits this month. Some can be caught on jig and tube combos. For ling, try using ghost shrimp Gulp. This was an excellent bait last season, producing good catches.

HOT SPOTS: If you want to fish for striped bass this month the outflow of Oyster Creek Power Plant in Barnegat Bay is wide open and produces fish. The warm water discharge from this plant has bay waters in this area hovering around 50 degrees. …
