Lawmakers meeting in Trenton on Monday passed a range of legislation, including a suicide prevention bill named for a Bergen County student who took her own life and an effort to protect senior citizens from wiring money to scam artists. Here are some highlights:

Flu awareness

The Assembly unanimously approved a measure that would require the Department of Health to prepare "printer-friendly" materials offering key details about flu vaccines. Sponsors said the measure is designed to promote awareness of the importance of an annual flu vaccine among older adults.

"Older New Jerseyans are far more susceptible to serious flu- related complications. Because their immune systems are weaker, the flu can result in hospitalization or even death among seniors," Pamela Lampitt, D-Camden, said in a statement. "Supplying members of this specific population with the information they need to protect themselves and those around them can keep older residents healthy and save lives."

The bill would require retirement communities throughout the state to post the information.

The measure now heads to the Senate for consideration.

Suicide prevention

Colleges and universities would be required to make doctors and other specialists with training in suicide prevention available on call 24 hours a day under a bill named for Madison Holleran of Allendale, who committed suicide while attending the University of Pennsylvania in January 2014. Suicide has become the second-leading cause of death on college campuses, sponsors said.

Sponsors are Sen. Kevin O'Toole, R-Cedar Grove, and Assemblymen David Russo, R-Ridgewood, and Scott Rumana, R-Wayne.

Holocaust reparations

Money awarded to victims of the Holocaust as reparations would be exempt from any legal claim or creditor, under a bill that unanimously cleared the Assembly. The only exemption would be for child-support payments. …
