A 12-year-old Garfield girl whose disappearance triggered an intensive four-hour search on Friday morning was safely reunited with her family after she was found walking along Route 46 in Hasbrouck Heights.

Juliette Lowney's family reported her missing at 10:12 a.m., less than a half-hour after her mother last saw her at her home on Banta Avenue.

When police confirmed that Lowney had been found, family and friends cheered and hugged each other outside her house. One woman gave two thumbs-up and smiled with relief.

Juliette, who was wearing a red shirt, blue jeans and brown boots, was located on Route 46 in Hasbrouck Heights. A passer-by noticed the blond-haired, blue-eyed girl on foot and called the Hasbrouck Heights police, who retrieved her.

The girl was not taken from her home, said Capt. Darren Sucorowski of the Garfield police. "She just walked from [her home] to there," he said. "Where she was going, we don't know."

It is unclear why Juliette left home, Sucorowski said. …
