Dressel Named Qp Coach

Article excerpt

Kerry Dressel, who authorities in 2009 accused of diverting fraudulent student loan money and using part of it to pay tuition for two of her players while serving as the St. Mary High School girls basketball coach, has been hired in the same position at Queen of Peace High School.

The school's athletic director, Ed Abromaitis, confirmed the hiring Tuesday afternoon during a phone call with The Record. Dressel starred at St. Mary and Fairleigh Dickinson University as a player in the 1980s before coaching at the high school for 14 years. She was dismissed from St. Mary at the end of the 2009 season.

"Basketball is my life. It's my love," said Dressel, 49. "It's been kind of boring not being involved."

She declined to comment on the 2009 charges - theft by deception, use of personal identifying information of another and theft by failure to make required disposition of property received - or their resolution.

"I think her coaching is going to speak for itself," Abromaitis said. "What she did in the past is behind her and everybody deserves a second chance."

Dressel - a 1982 St. Mary graduate and Bergen County's second all- time leading scorer with 2,566 points - was charged with fraud for diverting more than $115,000 in student loans between August 2007 and September 2008 by using the identity of a third person to apply for the loans, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.

Rachael Kressaty, Dressel's former assistant coach, also was arrested for allegedly providing the information used for at least one of the loans. The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office alleged that Dressel diverted as much as $30,000 to cover the tuition of two players while coaching at St. Mary.

She allegedly used the rest of the money to cover everyday personal expenses, according to the prosecutor's office.

According to a document posted on the New Jersey Department of Education's website, Dressel agreed on April 29, 2010 to forfeit her teaching certificate as a condition of entering a Pretrial Intervention Program following her arrest. …
