NEW YORK - After the final pitch had been thrown in the Subway Series opener Friday, the longest winning streak in the majors no longer belonged to the Mets.

They had last experienced defeat April 11, tying their franchise record with 11 straight wins. They owned baseball's best record, had just completed a 10-0 homestand, and were playing excellent baseball entering the hottest Subway Series in years.

On a cold night in the Bronx, it all came to an end.

The Yankees opened the Subway Series by cooling off their cross- town rivals with a resounding 6-1 win at Yankee Stadium. Michael Pineda outpitched Jacob deGrom and Mark Teixeira hit a pair of two- run homers.

"One of the things we did during the streak, we didn't fall behind by a lot, and tonight we did," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "As well as Pineda was pitching, it was tough to catch up."

Subway Series games always offer intrigue, but this one had extra zest due to the Mets' recent surge.

After years of non-contention, the Mets (13-4) have an early look of a team that will be in it until the end, sweeping three straight home series.

For all those wins, this series represents the greatest challenge yet. The Phillies and Braves are not expected to finish above .500, and while the Marlins were a trendy preseason pick to make the playoffs, they've floundered early this season.

The Yankees (10-7), tied for first in the AL East, entered the series having taken three of four games from Detroit, one of the top teams in the AL.

Their lineup is starting to hit like the organization had hoped, and the bullpen has been strong thus far.

Add in the constant debate about which team is better positioned for the future, and there was a buzz at Yankee Stadium for the opening game.

"We love this series because it's for the fans," Teixeira said. "Everything we do is for the fans, that's who we play for, and the Subway Series really gets the fans excited. …
