EAST RUTHERFORD - Landon Collins has a chip on his shoulder and the Giants are certainly glad the rest of the league - including them - put it there.

The star safety from Alabama was passed over by everyone in the first round Thursday night and he departed the site of the NFL Draft in Chicago extremely disappointed at not hearing his name called as was expected.

Collins did not have to wait long in Round 2.

The Giants aggressively went after Collins and traded up to the 33rd pick overall at the top of the second round to get him.

"It was tough. It was definitely tough, but I walked out of there [Thursday after the first round] with my head held high because I know what kind of capabilities I have as a player," Collins said. "And whatever team gets me, I have a chip on my shoulder to prove why I should've been a first-round candidate and I will definitely showcase it when I get there and start playing this upcoming season."

The Giants swapped their second-round pick (40th overall), their fourth-round pick (108th overall) and one of their two seventh- round picks (245th overall) to Tennessee for No. 33.

"When you move up to that spot, you have buddies around the National Football League, but they're not buddy enough to let you come up there for free," Giants general manager Jerry Reese said. "It's a premium spot when you're picking first in the second round, so you've got to pay to go up there and secure a guy."

The 6-foot, 228-pound Collins is expected to compete for one of two starting spots at safety, filling a significant void left by Antrel Rolle's departure to the Bears in free agency. Nat Berhe, entering his second season, is the favorite right now to pair with Collins, Prince Amukamara and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the Giants' starting secondary.
