Dumont Denied a Big North Exit

ROBBINSVILLE - An appeal by Dumont High School to be released from the Big North Conference was denied Wednesday by the NJSIAA league and conference committee.

"I'm disappointed," said Michael Oppido, the Dumont athletic director. "I feel bad for the student-athletes from Dumont High School."

The league and conference committee voted 4-0 to deny Dumont's appeal, agreeing with a Big North argument that if Dumont were permitted to leave, others would try to follow.

Dumont, which is the third-smallest school in the conference behind Pascack Hills and Westwood, made the request to the Big North last month. It cited six straight years of declining enrollment and a projection of seven more that could leave the Huskies just above the threshold for a Group 2 school.

The Huskies play in the Big North American with Cliffside Park, Fort Lee, Ridgefield Park and Dwight Morrow. They cross over with a Patriot Division that includes Ramsey, River Dell, Mahwah, Pascack Hills and Westwood. …
