'Complete' Progress Wins Biker's Notice

Evansville's 2014 "Honorable Mention" as a Bicycle Friendly Community is, at least in part, a reflection of the increased emphasis by city leaders, engineers and planners to improve the city's transportation infrastructure through "Complete Streets" improvements to existing roads. Although associated with bicycle- friendly efforts, the benefits of "Complete Streets" extend beyond cyclists. Complete Streets benefit everyone.

According to the Indiana Complete Streets Coalition, "Complete streets are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users; pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and public transportation users of all ages and abilities are able to safely move along and across a complete street."

A complete street provides a place for everyone, providing more transportation choices for safe travel.

Complete Streets are flexible in design to conform to most existing roadways, often requiring only paint.

One such project in Evansville, as documented in Greg Meyer's 2012 letter to the Courier & Press, is the "Road Diet" on Lincoln Avenue, where four lanes of traffic were transformed to three with a center turning lane.

Meyer reported the Evansville Metropolitan Planning Organization analyses automobile crash data throughout the area that showed a 33 percent improvement for the "road diet" section of Lincoln Avenue and a 58 percent improvement for those accidents at signalized intersections in the "road diet" - all while travel times and the number of vehicles using Lincoln Avenue remained about the same.

Countless vehicle repair dollars were saved and personal tragedies prevented. With paint.

In addition to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians benefitted. Bicycle "sharrows" alerted everyone of space designated for cyclists. Local residents no longer had to time a sprint across four lanes of traffic, but could cross one lane and use the turn only lane as an oasis before crossing the second lane of traffic. …
