EVSC Hosts Career Day for Bus Drivers at Bosse

While exploring options Wednesday morning for a different job, 31-year-old Brandon Nutt was taken back 15 years to when he was a 16-year-old and in the same Bosse High School parking lot hoping to pass his drivers education test. But this time, Nutt was driving an Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. school bus slowly around the parking lot next to the school's football field. He and others interested in driving a bus for the EVSC were maneuvering a bus forward and backward and through traffic cones to see how comfortable they felt doing it. Nutt said it reminded him of driving a U-Haul.

EVSC's Office of Transportation wants the public to know school bus drivers transport "our future with part-time hours and full- time benefits." To introduce interested individuals to the job, the district held a bus driver career fair Wednesday at Bosse. Those in attendance not only got to test drive a bus, but could ask questions related to the career, fill out applications and managers even held on-the-spot interviews.

Nutt said he has always been a cook, currently employed at Chili's, and he is simply seeking out something different. He learned about the fair on social media, and then checked the EVSC website.

"Oh it was great," he said. "I enjoyed myself.. Kind of took me back a little bit, too, because I graduated from Bosse, and this is where I took my drivers ed to get my license originally. A little- bitty, red car used to be out there."

School bus drivers work from approximately 6 to 8 a.m. and again from 2 to 4 p.m. with additional hours available, if they are interested. EVSC drivers have access to full-time benefits that include medical insurance, holiday pay and personal and sick leave.

"Having full benefits makes it really nice," said Debra Holmes, EVSC bus driver. "Because when you think about it, this is precious cargo that we're carrying of all ages. And it makes it easy to get a job between just to supplement the income if you want. …
