Tourney Gets Lift from Changes ; UNITED LEASING CHAMPIONSHIP AT VICTORIA NATIONAL 'Seating, Skyboxes, TV Towers Give New Views

For the most part, the 2014 United Leasing Championship will look just like the Web.com Tour event hosted by Victoria National Golf Club the past two summers. But tournament directors hope a few subtle changes will make the third installment of the tournament the best one yet.

In preparation for the ULC - which runs Thursday through Sunday at the Newburgh golf course - skyboxes and extra seating have been added near the clubhouse.

"It's just a nice amphitheater feel now, so it's a little more encompassing around the 18th green," said Chris Schindler, head golf pro at Victoria National. "It gives some great vantage points."

The course also will house more TV towers than during the previous tournaments so those watching on the Golf Channel can see additional angles of the grounds and the shots the professionals hit.

Part of the appeal of the Web.com Tour, said ULC tournament director Patrick Nichol, is the opportunity for fans in medium- sized markets to see future PGA Tour stars. The top 25 regular- season money winners from the Web.com Tour earn entry onto the main tour for the following season, and 25 more tour cards are awarded to the top finishers from a year-end tournament pitting the top Web.com players against the low finishers in the PGA Tour standings.

"That's one thing that this market will see over time, is eventually there will be a major champion come through here," said Nichol, who also serves as tournament director for the Web.com Tour's News Sentinel Open in Knoxville, Tennessee. "Bubba Watson, Keegan Bradley and Jason Dufner all played at some point in Knoxville. That's gonna take us a little while to get to here, but eventually it'll be the same exact situation."

Ben Martin, the 2013 ULC champion, is ranked 63rd in the most recent FedEx Cup standings and has earned more than $1 million this season on the top tour. The purse for the 2014 ULC is $600,000, roughly 10 times less than most PGA Tour events.
