Familiar Name Seeks Consistency on Tour

Article excerpt

Cheyenne Woods, Tiger Woods's niece, is ranked No. 37 on the L.P.G.A.'s developmental Symetra Tour and is playing in her second United States Women's Open.

Walking along the fairways of Pinehurst No. 2 at the United States Women's Open, Cheyenne Woods could not help but smile when fans yelled "Go Deacs!" as she passed by.

After all, she was back in Atlantic Coast Conference territory, home to her alma mater, Wake Forest University -- the Demon Deacons - - and a place where intrastate rivalries with Duke, North Carolina and North Carolina State run about as deep as the sandy soil that gave this region its nickname, sandhills.

Woods, 23, opened with an 8-over 78 in a round that included four three-putt greens, two birdies, six bogeys and two double-bogeys.

"I hit the ball horrible today, and I putted just as bad," said Woods, who is paired with the L.P.G.A. Hall of Famer Juli Inkster and Natalie Gulbis for the first two rounds. "Tomorrow is a new day."

Fans regularly line up for autographs from Woods, but while she is always gracious, she also makes it clear to news media that she wants to be recognized for more than her famous name in golf, as the niece of Tiger Woods. This Woods wants to become one of the top women in the game.

"I'm laid back and very patient," she said. "But at the same time, I want to have a balance of patience, as well as a sense of urgency."

Woods kicked off this year with her first professional victory on a major tour, winning the RACV Volvik Ladies Masters in February, an event co-sanctioned by Australian Ladies Professional Golf and the Ladies European Tour.

"To get that win under my belt sort of verified what I thought my abilities were," said Woods, who graduated from Wake Forest in 2012 and turned professional that year.

"It showed me I am able to compete at that level."

Woods earned international experience playing on the European tour last year. …
