AT&T and DirecTV to testify before Congress on merger

You can't tell the players without a scorecard, especially if you are a member of Congress monitoring telecommunications mergers this summer. On Tuesday morning, it will be the turn of executives from AT&T and DirecTV to justify to the House Judiciary Committee why their proposed $48.5 billion deal should pass antitrust muster. The companies will argue that AT&T, which has broadband service but little video programming, needs the satellite television offerings of DirecTV, which has no broadband offering.

Growth rate of U.S. economy expected to be revised lower

On Wednesday, the United States Commerce Department will release its third and final estimate for the rate of economic growth in the first quarter of 2014.
