GOP Blames Davis for Error ; One among List Says She Doesn't Endorse Candidate

The leader of the Kansas Republican Party blasted Democratic candidate for governor Paul Davis after a former Republican congresswoman whose endorsement Davis' campaign touted this week said she didn't actually endorse him.

Jan Meyers was one of more than 100 former Republican elected officials included in Republicans for Kansas Values, a group assembled to endorse Davis.

Davis appeared with about 40 of them at a campaign event Tuesday. Meyers wasn't there, but her name was on the list printed on posters and distributed to journalists.

But Wint Winter Jr., a former state senator and one of the group's leaders, confirmed Thursday that Meyers, though a member of the group, says she isn't backing Davis.

"There was just some miscommunication," Winter said. "That's all I can say about it."

Clay Barker, executive director of the Kansas Republican Party, placed blame for the mix-up on the Davis campaign.

"The Paul Davis campaign's dishonesty hit a new low this week, and Kansans deserve an apology," Barker said.

Chris Pumpelly, a spokesman for the campaign, said it wouldn't comment on Barker's statement. Pumpelly referred all questions about Meyers' non-endorsement to Winter.

Winter said he personally talked to about 80 or 90 of the Republicans on the list of Davis endorsers, but Meyers was one with whom former Senate President Dick Bond spoke.

Winter also said Meyers, 85, was one of only four on the list who don't use email. He said after verbally confirming with those on the list that they all wanted to join Republicans for Kansas Values -- a group formed for the purpose of endorsing Davis -- the members of the group were then sent further confirmation of their membership via email.

Meyers, he said, was sent that confirmation via traditional mail. …
