Marple Beats Rork to Win Republican County Commission Nomination

Article excerpt

Retired rural mail carrier Carol Marple defeated longtime defense attorney William K. "Billy" Rork to win the Republican nomination in the Nov. 4 general election for the 1st District seat on the Shawnee County Commission.

Complete, unofficial results provided by the county election official indicated Marple had 3,357 votes, or 54.3 percent of those cast in Tuesday's primary, compared to 2,827, or 45.7 percent, for Rork.

Marple said she had "a lot of great people helping me and a lot of good folks voting for me, and I really appreciate their votes."

She added, "Maybe people just want an ordinary person" on the commission.

Marple won after a campaign in which she described herself as an "ordinary citizen," not a politician, who has worked hard all her life and believes the average person should have a say in how his or her money is spent.

Marple monitored election results Tuesday evening with 15 members of her family, including five of her grandchildren, at a gathering outside her southwest Shawnee County home.

Rork kept track of election results at a watch party in his Topeka law office. He indicated afterward he was disappointed with the outcome but didn't regret getting involved.

"I love this county," he said.

Rork said he and Marple spoke earlier Tuesday and agreed whoever won the primary would support the other in the general election.

"Either way, we'll have a good Republican candidate," he said.

Marple said she would have supported Rork in the general election if he had won the primary.

Marple will run in the general election against incumbent Commissioner Shelly Buhler, 49, of 503 Maple Court in Rossville, and Democrat Chad Manspeaker, 37, of 1304 S.W. College Ave.

Manspeaker, a Topeka City Council member since 2011, ran unopposed in Tuesday's Democratic primary election for the 1st District seat. …
