United States Honor Flag on Its Way to Topeka for Fallen Officer's Funeral Saturday ; U.S. Honor Flag Will Be Brought for Funeral Use

The United States Honor Flag was scheduled to be at special 9/11 events on Thursday. Instead, it is on its way to Topeka for fallen Topeka police Cpl. Jason Harwood's funeral on Saturday.

Harwood, who served 15 years with the department, was shot and killed in the line of duty Sunday in East Topeka during a traffic stop.

"We will be coming in loud and proud," said Chris Heisler, founder of the Honor Network, which manages the Honor Flag program.

The flag will leave Dallas at 4:15 a.m. Thursday and will arrive in Topeka between 10:15 and 10:30 a.m., Heisler said. It will be accompanied by a law enforcement motorcade throughout Oklahoma and Kansas.

The flag was flown to Kansas City, Mo., in December 2012 for the Topeka funerals of Cpl. David Gogian and officer Jeff Atherly, who were killed in the line of duty Dec. 16, 2012.

The United States Honor Flag started traveling after 9/11, Heisler said.
