Musings at the mid-week:

- One question was posed to me often on a visit to Las Vegas. Heck, even before I went out for a weekend of unrest and no relaxation.

- What's the spread gonna be on Kansas State-Auburn?

- Usually I offered a stumped look, then blurted out the number, eight, thinking that seemed about right.

- Hey, I hit one. For no money as luck would have it.

- Oddsmakers installed the Tigers as 8-point favorites, though that creeped up to nine by the time I thumbed a ride to the airport.

- For what it's worth, an extended football weekend in Vegas gets kinda pricey. And, loooong.

- Particularly without golf clubs. Like watching a football game with a ticket in hand, golf is another way to jumble various emotions over a 31/2-hour period.

- Auburn represents the highest-ranked nonconference opponent to visit K-State with Bill Snyder as coach. Heck, the highest since Penn State came in No. 2 in 1969.

- Back when Joe Paterno was a young head coach and Vince Gibson guided the Cats with Lynn Dickey.

- Snyder began his second head coaching stint that year. At Foothill High School in Santa Ana, Calif.

- Yes, the Auburn visit is huge, particularly within the new playoff structure for the postseason.

- Still, a loss for K-State would not be devastating (remember the betting line), unless it is coupled with a rash of injuries.

- The Kansas-Duke game was actually on one of the biggest screens at the sports book where I was taking in college football. The game stayed in that spot, in its entirety.

- Someone in Vegas was wrongly tipped off that a basketball court was in use.

- Watching the football game unfold, which meant watching problems escalate for the Jayhawks, there were times when desire seemed to be an issue for KU. …
