SFT Frosh Hits Stride with Win

It was kind of a different feeling for Hannah Honeyman last Thursday at the Northern Heights Invitational.

On the one hand, the Santa Fe Trail freshman had plenty of reason to celebrate. Three meets into the season, she had accomplished one of her major goals for the year, breaking the Charger school record.

"That was probably the biggest goal I had," said Honeyman, whose time of 16 minutes, 2 seconds was eight seconds faster than the old Charger record of 16:10 set by Paige Croucher in 2010.

At the same time, however, Honeyman wasn't altogether satisfied with hitting it so early in her prep career. In setting the Trail school record, Honeyman also suffered a rare defeat.

After winning the first two races of her high school career at Anderson County and Trail's home meet, Honeyman finished runner-up to Osage City's Aundrea Koger by 11 seconds. Not bad company considering Koger is the defending Class 3A state champion, but still it left Honeyman relishing a rematch with her new-found rival.

"I was nervous and I just tried to stay with her during the race," Honeyman said. "I started out faster but then she passed me. It was tough, but I'm looking forward to racing her again."

She will get that chance as the two will meet twice in the next three meets, at Council Grove and Osage City. The showdowns could produce even better times as both runners were sent on a wrong turn at the Northern Heights meet, yet still recovered to top the remainder of the field by more than a minute.

Honeyman's early success has hardly been a surprise to Charger coach Russell Fawl. In junior high, Honeyman's only defeat came to a male runner and the following week she avenged that loss by 25 seconds.

"Our assistant coach just calls her, 'Lung and Legs.'" Fawl said. "She just has that natural ability. She's got desire plus talent and that's a huge thing. …
