Terry Blount: Too Early to Count out Tom Brady

Article excerpt

Welcome to Week 5.

With only Miami and Oakland on byes, most fantasy rosters should be fully staffed and ready to go. Let's take a closer look.

Lately I have been asked the following question several times: "Should I dump Tom Brady?" I'll admit this is a legitimate concern based on the New England quarterback's slow (read: snail-like) start to his 2014 campaign. While I understand many owners desire to cut bait on Brady, I am not ready to dismiss a guy who is a perennial fantasy superstar. It's still a bit soon to give up.

Brady's main issues seem to stem from a lack of protection from his offensive line. This week Brady will face a Bengals defense that has sacked opposing quarterbacks seven times in 2014 (tied for 18th in the NFL) while allowing 239 passing yards per game (15th in the league). Normally this matchup would not be considered a challenge for him, but when one throws in the fact that the Cincinnati defense has limited opposing quarterbacks to score an average of 18.2 fantasy points per game (third best in the league), suddenly the matchup appears to be more formidable for Brady.

Still, I believe after the bloodletting the Chiefs administered to the Pats in Monday's game should help New England in general (and Brady in particular) to be more focused and motivated in Week 5.

Call Brady a low-end QB1 who is on some thin ice this week. If he falls through versus the Bengals, then we'll be talking more seriously about benching or even cutting him going forward.

As you all are aware, I have now unsuccessfully predicted a great game for San Diego tight end Antonio Gates for two consecutive weeks. I am now over this obsession. To make it up to you, I have found a new obsession, as Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce should be a guy I could safely recommend as a TE1 for nearly every game in the foreseeable future. …
