Shawnee Heights Takes Down West, 60-13

Article excerpt

Running back Tony Barksdale took Shawnee Heights' first play from scrimmage 63 yards around the right side for a touchdown, only to have it called back for a holding penalty.

No problem.

Heights' Austen Hubert took the next carry 72 yards around the left sideline for a TD, starting an onslaught of scoring in the T- Birds' 60-13 victory over West at Hummer Sports Park.

After the run, Hubert found Barksdale on the sideline.

"I was like, 'It's all right. You'll get another one,' " Hubert said.

The receiver ended up being right -- times four.

The senior Barksdale only added to his impressive season rushing totals, racking up eight carries for 225 yards with four touchdowns. That meant, in his eight carries, four times he scored, once his rush was cut short because a holding penalty and three times he was actually tackled.

"Our guys blocked hard all night," Heights coach Jason Swift said. "I had confidence we were going to be able to be successful because of our blocking on the outside."

West (1-7, 0-2) made an early statement by scoring on the game's first drive.

Following a 43-yard completion to Jaquan Bridges, quarterback Josh Reynolds found Zach Shima for a 1-yard score as the Chargers took their only lead with 8:01 left in the first quarter.

"We got behind, so we had to try to see where we were character- wise," Swift said. "Our kids buckled down and played hard."

Little went wrong for Heights after that.

The T-Birds (4-4, 2-0) racked up 490 offensive yards in the first half, scoring touchdowns on all seven of their possessions to take a 46-7 lead into the break.

Quarterback Camden Wheatley was impressive alongside Barksdale, completing 9 of 11 passes for 215 yards with three scores before the starters were pulled midway through the third quarter.

One other first-half highlight came from receiver Malik Stanley, who pulled down a 34-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline with only his right hand as Heights added to its lead.

The T-Birds scored 60 straight points before West's Travis Gardenhire plunged ahead for a 1-yard score in the fourth quarter. …
