Veterans Day Events Include Rose Address

Retired Brigadier Gen. Deborah Rose, who in 2007 became the first woman to ascend to that position in the Kansas National Guard, will speak Tuesday at the annual Veterans Day observance at the All Veterans Memorial at the Great Overland Station, 701 N. Kansas.

Rose, who served as the Grand Marshal for Saturday's Veterans Day Parade around the Statehouse in Topeka, will speak at a ceremony near the Corridor of Flags at 2 p.m. A Veterans Day-only sale of commemorative memorial bricks -- honoring both military members and civilians -- will be conducted.

Among other Veterans Day activities and promotions:

- Veterans and active military members can eat a free lunch Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Texas Roadhouse restaurants across the country, including the Topeka location at 5901 S.W. Huntoon. Proof of service ... in the form of an active military ID, VA card or discharge papers will be required.

- Veterans and active military members can receive a complimentary "Create Your Own Combo" meal Tuesday at On the Border restaurants across the country, including the Topeka location at 1235 S.W. Wanamaker. Proof of past or current military service will be required.

- Prairie Band Casino and Resort, 12305 150th Road near Mayetta, is offering a free buffet to veterans and active military personnel from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Guests will be asked to show a Hero Players Card or proof of military service.

- The Kansas State Museum, 6425 S.W. 6th in Topeka, will offer free admission to all veterans and active military members on Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Regular admissions are $8 for adults and $6 for students. Children age 5 and under are admitted free.

- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will waive user fees for veterans, as well as active and reserve members of the armed forces and their families, at all Corps-operated recreation areas on Tuesday. …
