Bill Self Dials Up Early-Morning Practice for KU Basketball Team

Article excerpt

LAWRENCE -- The Kansas basketball team's first practice Thursday after a 72-40 loss to top-ranked Kentucky did not go well.

The result? KU coach Bill Self dialed up his team's next practice for 6 a.m. Friday.

"We didn't get a lot done yesterday," Self said, "so we had to finish up today."

Self was quick to say the extra practice was not "punishment," but he also said the early-morning practice wasn't previously scheduled.

"I thought there was very little sense of urgency (Thursday)," Self said, "compared to what I thought we should have had."

The Jayhawks' loss to Kentucky on Tuesday resulted in a number of team worsts under Self. KU had its fewest points (40), assists (4), field goals (11) and lowest field-goal percentage (20 percent) during the coach's 12-year run.

Self was asked how he approached working with the team following the rout.

"I think a lot of times coaches go through different moods where they're mad. Usually mad doesn't help you win," Self said. "What you've got to do, you've got to get better and correct. But as you do get better and correct, usually you become more mad going through that."

After the team's return flight was delayed -- KU's players didn't make it back to Lawrence until early morning Wednesday -- the Jayhawks took Wednesday off from basketball while still holding a team meeting.

"I felt like it was constructive," KU sophomore Brannen Greene said. "We met with coach, then after that, we also met as players and said what we had to say then."

The gathering evidently didn't have a carryover effect to Thursday, though, as Self called an audible in scheduling a two-a- day Friday.

The coach was much happier with his players in the Friday morning session, saying it was a "good" workout while complimenting his players' attitudes. …
