Nativities, Noels Abound ; Noels: Nativity Sets Coming from All around the World

Article excerpt

Organizers of the third annual Nativities and Noels holiday extravaganza say they expect the event will be bigger and better than ever in 2014.

The event, which will feature more than 400 Nativity sets from around the world, plus live Christmas music and refreshments, will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Topeka Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2401 S.W. Kingsrow.

There is no admission charge for the event, which organizers say is designed to serve as a reminder of the meaning of Christmas.

They will range in size from under an inch to more than a foot tall and will reflect a wide variety of materials, such as porcelain, wood, clay, cloth, paper, corn husks, coconut shells, large seeds and gourds.

"We even have some that are made out of recycled materials, like one from Mexico made of old car parts and another from Haiti made out of a steel drum," Christensen said. "I'm a big recycler, so I really like that."

A "seek-and-find" sheet -- similar in concept to "Where's Waldo?" -- will be given to interested display visitors. Though it was introduced to Nativities and Noels last year as a way to interest children and teens in the display, the seek-and-find sheet was popular with many adults, as well, Christensen said.

Christensen said Nativities and Noels is designed to appeal to members of various denominational backgrounds. …
