Heights Boys at a Glance

Article excerpt

Sam Stroh's first season as Shawnee Heights' boys basketball coach produced a 16-6 record and a second-place finish in the Centennial League race.

In year two, Stroh and his staff are setting their sights on continued improvement.

"I feel confident," Stroh said. "I thought overall we had some success last year and put a foundation down, but obviously we want to go further and keep continuing to build the program.

"I think this group of seniors is a good group of guys to keep laying that foundation for our younger classes. We had a strong freshman team and we had a strong JV team last year and we want to continue those successes."

Stroh said that a year's familiarity between the coaching staff and players should also be an advantage as the T-Birds move forward.

"They're comfortable with me and we have the same coaching staff still intact, nothing new there, and we went together this summer to the KU and K-State team camps and we had our own team camp," Stroh said.

"I'm looking forward to it. The league's going to be tough again but we have a lot of guys with experience and talent that return and we'll also have some younger guys that hopefully can step up and fill some roles left by some of our better players last year."

Shawnee Heights graduated a strong senior class, including two- time All-City pick Jovan Barksdale, but the T-Birds will build around returning seniors Tony Barksdale Jr. (5-foot-9 guard), Kobe Goudeau (5-10 guard), Andrew Korbe (5-11 guard), Rhett Purling (6-2 forward), Tez Scroggins (5-11 guard), Malik Stanley (6-3 forward) and Camden Wheatley (6-0 guard).

Juniors Dawson Pomeroy (6-2 forward) and Ahmad Winston (6-3 forward) are also expected to battle for playing time this season as are sophomores Trey Brown (5-9 guard) and Poncho Freeman (6-2 forward). …
