Kansas Ballet's 'Nurcracker' Includes Ukraine Guest Stars

A 40-piece orchestra and professional ballet stars from Ukraine will join a cadre of northeast Kansas dancers to perform the Kansas Ballet Company's second annual production of "The Nutcracker" this weekend at the Topeka Performing Arts Center.

Performances will be at 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday in the Georgia Neese Gray Performance Hall of TPAC, 214 S.E. 8th, where tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors or $12 for youths either in person or through Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000 or wwww.ticketmaster.com.

"This year we've really stepped up the choreography to include more virtuoso and technically demanding steps for our students," said co-director Stephanie Heston, a Topeka-born professional ballerina who along with her husband, Alexander Smirnov, a Russian- born dancer, returned to Topeka in 2012 to establish the Kansas Ballet Academy and founded the Kansas Ballet Company.

"Two years of hard work and intense training in the Russian method is really beginning to pay off for our dancers, and we are so excited to watch them blossom as artists and become powerhouse performers," said Heston, who will co-direct "The Nutcracker" with Smirnov, who also will dance the role of Herr Drosselmeyer, the magical godfather of a girl named Clara. His gift of a nutcracker doll sets up her Christmas Eve dream of action and adventure in enchanted places in Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky's ballet setting of E.T.A. Hoffmann's story, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King."

About the local cast, Heston continued, "Topeka has something to be really proud of in these dedicated and determined young people, and we encourage everyone to come out and cheer them on as they hold their own on stage with our guest professional dancers. …
