New KU Football Staff Visits Topeka as Part of State Tour

Whatever earning power Kansas generates will be key to the revitalization of its football program.

That was the message new coach David Beaty delivered to KU supporters Tuesday as his staff joined him at a meet-and-greet at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center.

Although he mentioned resources Kansas maintains that can help him with the rebuilding project he accepted, Beaty did not reference the Jayhawks' budget when he defined "earning."

Instead, he spoke of the need to earn trust, respect, support and credibility as he takes over a program that won two Big 12 games the past four seasons -- the time frame in which the conference began staging a full round-robin schedule.

"You've got to share your vision with fans, and the next thing is about earning that respect and not expecting anyone to give it to us," Beaty said.

"We're asking them in return to understand that it's a process and not an event, and we're not going to skip a step. We're telling them that message up front, so they know we will not sacrifice any steps in the process to build a winner, long term, something they can be proud of. We're going to build it right, but to do that there's an unspecified timeline. We want to make sure it's something built to last."

The Jayhawks are coming off a 3-9 finish in which previous coach Charlie Weis was fired four games into the 2014 season. Beaty, who coached two previous times at Kansas as an assistant, left the Texas A&M staff to take the KU head coaching position.

Tuesday's visit before the Topeka Jayhawk Club was part of a tour that included previous stops in Hays and Hutchinson, and will be followed by gatherings in Kansas City and Wichita.

"This man is full of energy," KU athletic director Sheahon Zenger told the Ramada audience. "If I don't get a hold of him by 7 in the morning, I'm not getting him until 11 that night. …
