Dog of the Year: Old Dog Still Knows a Few Tricks; Ramberg's Brother Writes In

Article excerpt

This week, a diabetic Yorkie with a heart of gold and a letter from Jim Ramberg's brother both made me smile.

John Gotti Lewis, the oldest dog submitted so far in this contest at 15 years old, is enjoying his golden twilight with his owner, Jill Lewis, of Topeka. He is blind and diabetic, and even though he has to get two shots of insulin a day, he doesn't even twitch.

Despite being blind, Johnnie goes almost everywhere with his family, including vacations, and even goes swimming with them.

"It is amazing how really smart he still is, and how he has adapted to his blindness," Jill Lewis said. "We love him so much -- he has brought us a lot of joy!"

If you'd like to submit a pooch for the Dog of the Year contest, send an email to joshua.rouse@cjonline.com with the name and photo of your dog, as well as a great story. …
