WU BASEBALL DRAWS WESTERN IN MIAA TOURNAMENT: The Washburn baseball team earned the No. 5 seed in the MIAA Tournament and will play a best-of-three, first-round series at No. 4 seed Missouri Western, the conference announced Sunday. The series starts Thursday at Western's Griffon Field in St. Joseph, Mo.

Washburn enters 30-19 overall and 22-14 in the MIAA while Western is 29-19 and 22-14 in the conference. The teams split a four-game series early in the season in Topeka.

The winner of the first-round series will move on to the tournament semifinals at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan., May 7-9.

WU SOFTBALL SWEPT AT NORTHWEST MISSOURI: The Washburn softball team was swept at Northwest Missouri on Sunday, wrapping up the regular season with losses of 3-2 and 7-4. Washburn had the bases loaded in the top of the seventh of the first game but Northwest recorded a forceout at third to end the game.

The Ichabods couldn't rally from a 7-1 deficit in the second game, despite getting solo home runs from Marina Quimby, Cassidy Merriman, Lauren Thimmesch and Taylor Zimmerman.

No. 7-seeded Washburn (27-22, 14-12 MIAA) will open the MIAA Tournament against No. 2-seeded Pittsburg State at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Blue Valley Recreation Complex in Overland Park.

CITY BOYS GOLF TOURNEY TO BE HELD MONDAY: The city boys high school golf tournament, in conjunction with the Topeka West Invitational, will be held Monday at Topeka Country Club. Washburn Rural is the defending team champion in both the city and West meets while Rural senior Andrew Beckler is the defending individual champion in both events and has won three straight city titles. City teams will play 27 holes, beginning at 9:30 a.m., while out-of-town competitors will play 18 holes starting at 1 p. …
