Being Well: Shelby Moss, Continental Resources Inc

Article excerpt

OKLAHOMA CITY - Regardless of what challenge the day may bring, Shelby Moss faces it head-on. It's her job to get crude oil from North Dakota's Bakken Shale formation onto trucks, into pipelines and to the market. The crude oil marketing scheduler at Continental Resources Inc. said her job is like arranging puzzle pieces.

For her personally, one important piece of her own jigsaw puzzle is a boot camp two days per week. Her motivation to keep all the proverbial pieces in place is her 21/2-year-old son, Slayd Brown.

While her wellness journey began in September of 2012, her health challenges started many years ago. At age 14, she had a benign brain tumor removed. Since then, she has struggled with a seizure disorder. When she's unhealthy or stressed, her seizures get worse, she said.

"I have to stay healthy for my son," she said. "I can't take care of a baby if I'm having seizures. The stress is just too unhealthy for me."

She joined the company in Enid in October 2011. She said she wasn't in the best shape when she became pregnant, and the stress of a new job compounded her troubles. When she was 35 weeks pregnant, she had a seizure while at work. In April 2012, she took maternity leave.

In September, she was one of the first employees to join wellness coordinator Sara Karber's weekly boot camp. Moss and other employees walk with Karber two blocks to the Myriad Botanical Gardens from Continental's headquarters at 20 N. Broadway Ave.

They run sprints across the lawn, run up and down stairs, often using resistance bands and weights to pump up the routine. Moss said not one class has been exactly the same. Karber said Moss is the most consistent attendee among all the employees who participate.

"She is a rock," Karber said. "If it's freezing outside, she's there. If it's 100 degrees outside, she's there."

Moss participated in Weight Watchers when the company first offered on-site meetings. …
