Outgunned Democrats Stick to Middle Ground in 5th District Race

OKLAHOMA CITY - Outgunned by more than $1 million, the two Democratic candidates for Oklahoma's 5th Congressional District seat said they are making up the difference with a retail-style, face-to- face campaign strategy.

One of those candidates, state Sen. Al McAffrey, said he believes voters will shift away from tea party policies and embrace centrist candidates.

With just days to go before the primary runoff election on Tuesday, McAffrey, a Democrat from Oklahoma City, has banked about $105,000 for the race. McAffrey's federal campaign filing reported $105,607 in individual campaign contributions and $6,070 in refunds to his campaign.

McAffrey also reported $11,390 in cash on hand. McAffrey said what he didn't have in money, he made up for in face-to-face campaigning.

"We've been working hard, using the old-school approach," he said. "We only had a short time to get our name out there."

McAffrey said his volunteers have canvassed the district, contacting voters and urging Democrats to go to the polls. His opponent, Edmond's Tom Guild, said he is using a similar approach.

Guild, who is making his third bid for the congressional seat, said he, too, is using the door-to-door approach during the final days of the campaign. He said he has targeted about 3,500 households for contact before Tuesday.

"As of (Thursday) we've reached about half of them," Guild said. "And we're working around the clock."

Federal Election Commission filings show that Guild is close to McAffrey in campaign contributions. Guild reported raising $110,297. Of that figure, $37,370 came from individual contributions with the remainder, about $72,000, in the form of a personal loan from himself.

Guild reported $1,425 in cash on hand. He said he wasn't concerned about campaign finances.

"We have run a very frugal campaign," he said. "We have worked very hard to keep expenses low. …
