Periscope: Counting Anniversaries by the Moon

More than a decade ago I was in Texas, writing for the Galveston County Daily News. I had an idea for a column based on my frequent visits to Starbucks, where I often ended up sharing an outdoor table with a stranger. That always led to a conversation, and I thought each would make a good read. It never got off the ground, but the first attempt was a chat with a woman named Sunny Day (really), who told me about her struggle with alcohol and love. I was reminded of this conversation because my own wedding anniversary is Thursday. We're celebrating 10 pretty darn good years - about 120 moons. The following column was written but never published:

Sunny Day and her husband have an unusual love story, but Sunny's days are clouded now by a fear that her relationship will never recapture the trust and intimacy that once prevailed.

We sat at a green metal table in front of a League City coffee boutique, sipping from tall paper cups. Sunny is a 33-year-old bookkeeper who lives in Bacliff, just a couple of miles from the man who is still her husband. She wore a black top that melded into red curls at her shoulders. Black eyeliner drew attention to brown eyes that weren't afraid to make contact until they filled with tears.

Sunny met her husband three years ago at the alcohol recovery meetings they both attended. Coincidentally, it turned out they lived in the same apartment complex. They were friends, not yet dating, when one night Sunny's future husband, a locksmith, got a call.

He asked her if she wanted to ride along. She did. The call was to a house in a bad neighborhood, and when the job was complete the customers offered to pay in contraband rather than cash. The offer was refused, and the pair locked the truck's doors and drove away.

An ambitious police officer, apparently thinking they'd been in the area to buy drugs, pulled them over within a few blocks. …
