AJUBILANT Manchester Labour party painted the town hall red to wipe out the last remainder of the city's Liberal Democrat opposition.

All nine of Nick Clegg's councillors were up for reelection this year but every one lost - some by just 200 or 300 votes.

It is the third successive election in which all the sitting Lib Dems have failed to hold on.

In the city centre, former mayor Elaine Boyes lost to Labour in a landslide that knocked her party into fourth, behind the Greens and the Conservatives.

In Withington the party's leader Simon Wheale vowed to stand again in the future, insisting the disastrous result would not necessarily bode badly for his party's chances in the constituency come 2015.

But despite a brief recount in Didsbury East, Labour's assault was over and done within little more than an hour.

Council leader Sir Richard Leese admitted the party now needs to tread carefully in order to avoid abusing public trust. …
