Mummy's the Word! Museum Plans Its Own Pharaoh's Tomb ; Pounds 1.8m Transformation Would Include Recreation of Resting Place of Thutmose III

AMUSEUM is planning to create a life-size replica of a Pharaoh's tomb.

The novel idea is part of a proposed Pounds 1.8m transformation of Bolton Museum.

The vast burial chamber, complete with hieroglyphics, will be modelled on the tomb of Thutmose III, the sixth Pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty who ruled Egypt for 54 years.

Council bosses hope the attraction will be 'like no other in the world' and bring thousands of visitors to the town and into the award-winning museum.

The tomb will be the main entrance area to the museum's vast Egyptology collection, which includes more than 12,000 relics and one of the best preserved male mummies in the country - believed to be a relative of Pharaoh Ramesses II.

The council will submit a bid for cash to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

A council spokesman said: "Initial plans to renovate the existing gallery have now been re-drafted to include a purpose-built gallery space, created above the museum and library building. …
