IF there was ever a reason to drop the kids owith their grandparents and jet ofor the weekend, Milan is it.

e Italian second city is perfect for a relaxing long weekend, and has a far less touristy feel than the traditionally romantic cities of Venice and Verona.

Firstly, those who think all Italian food is the same will be shocked by what Milan has to oer.

Using rice more than pasta, and hardly going near a tomato, Milanese cuisine is completely dierent to the rest of the country.

And then there's Panettone, a heavenly, sweet dessert cake that Milan just can't get enough of.

But it isn't just food that makes the city perfect for a short break with your loved one.

e art scene is tremendous, and there's far more to see than works by Da Vinci, so packing it all into a weekend might be a struggle.

But if fashion is more your thing, Milan is more or less the capital of Europe, if not the world.

Admittedly, if you want to get a designer handbag, suit or shoes here it's going to set you back a lot (possibly more than your fight!) but there's nothing wrong with browsing, and maybe the odd treat... but Milan isn't just for loved-up couples and shopping.

e city is home to 185,000 students - that's over 10 per cent of Milan's population.

In other words, whatever you're into, Milan probably has it.
