WARTIME GUN FOUND AT SCHOOL ; Staff Make Discovery While Digging Fields.

STAFF at a primary school were given a shock when they dug up part of a Second World War artillery gun from underneath their playing fields.

The discovery was made as a parent-governor carried out work at Yew Tree Community School in Chadderton, Oldham, on Tuesday evening.

He was digging up earth to install posts for new benches, part of a revamp at the school which is increasing in size.

However he was shocked when he stumbled upon the metal object, initially believed to be a used artillery shell.

He sought advice from a nearby Territorial Army base, who told him to the call the police.

Police were called and attended the school on Alcester Street.

Officers took photographs of the device, which was hollow, and they were sent off to the Ministry of Defence for analysis.

It was eventually concluded it was most likely a part of a firing mechanism from an artillery gun, police said.

It was deemed that it was not dangerous and was safe to move, with an officer taking it away in his car. …
