SPAIN............................ 1 HOLLAND .................... 5 A DUTCH masterclass left the Oranje in World Cup heaven - and put an expectant smile on the faces of Reds everywhere.

The Netherlands - led by new United manager Louis van Gaal - battered world champions Spain, with Old Trafford striker Robin van Persie netting twice.

The Spanish took an early lead thanks to a Xabi Alonso penalty but RVP - looking sharp as a razor after spending much of the season injured - equalised with a stunning header just before half-time.

He scored a second on 72 minutes while Arjen Robben (2) and Stefan de Vrij bagged the others.

It left the world and European champions and one of the favourites for the tournament on the end of a humiliating defeat.

The Dutch avenged their defeat by the same opponents in the 2010 final in outrageous style, with four unanswered goals in an irresistible second half display in Salvador.

Vincent Del Bosque's side, who also lost their opener against Switzerland four years ago, took the lead through Alonso's disputed penalty, a lead they held until Van Persie's instinctive flying header levelled matters just before the break. …
