I AM returning to the o"ce today after a week o , which was pretty much spent watching football at night and anything that happened to be on by day.

When you have such a week, you 'nd you can quote verbatim the most popular adverts by the end of it.

One that seems to be on constantly features a Welsh coal miner who ends up learning how to use a computer for the 'rst time, despite being in his 40s, so he can email his daughter and learn skills he may rely on if his line of work continues, as he puts it, to be 'on a downer.' To those who use IT every day of their lives, it may be unbelievable that any adult doesn't know how to switch a laptop on and draft an email to a loved one.

But the reality is so many people in this region lack those skills.

We are delighted to be supporting a campaign spearheaded by IT entrepreneur Martha Lane Fox, who co-founded Lastminute.com, to drive up the digital skills of the population.

It launches at MediaCity tomorrow and it aims to address the fact there are around one million people across the north west who don't have the basic online skills needed to send and receive email, use a search engine like Google or simply browse the internet. …
