Newseries THE SINGER TAKES IT ALL Fri C4 9pm When We Love TV meets Alan Carr, he's so hungover we suspect he must have been raiding his famous Chatty Man drinks globe for a few too many glasses of Lambrini... Then Al sheepishly confesses that he got a bit squiffy at home the night before our interview while watching Brazil lose 7-1 to Germany in the World Cup semi-final.

But, ever the professional, his sensitive state doesn't prevent the Spexy Beast from raving about his wacky new prime-time talent series, The Singer Takes It All, which debuts on C4 this week. What attracted you to this show? The fact that it's interactive and the great British public are the judges make it really groundbreaking - which is not something you usually associate with me! It's a singing show with a Gogglebox feel, because the show is in the hands of the viewers at home. It strips away all the boring sob stories you get on The X Factor. How does it actually work? Budding singers perform live on an 18m-long moving stage, while the audience at home rates the performances via a downloadable app. If the contestant sings like Mariah Carey, the viewer cam press 'Hit' and the singer progresses further down the stage towards the Gold Zone and cash prizes. If the contestant hits a terrible bum note, the viewers can press 'Miss' and send them sliding backwards towards oblivion. It sounds hilarious.

We're openly encouraging nut-jobs to come down and sing! I enjoyed The Voice, but when they got rid of the loons it became less interesting. We all love characters like Wagner and Diva Fever. That said, you need to have a balance. We want talented singers as well, otherwise it's just a freak show on a conveyor belt.

Have you always been a fan of singing shows like The X Factor and Pop Idol? Oh yeah, I love all of that. In the past I've phoned in to vote for people like Will Young and Ella Henderson, who I thought was brilliant, and I voted for Wagner just to annoy Simon Cowell. I also enjoyed the daft Bun 'nd Cheese and Ariel Burdett, the scary lady who freaked out Cheryl Cole. …
