SENSATIONAL SEASON TO COME ; Classical Music

Article excerpt

THIS week I'm taking another look at the season to come: this time opera, choral music, solo recitals and chamber music.

Opera North's visits are usually highlights, and conductors in action may well be contenders for the post of music director in two years' time, as Richard Farnes is slowly bowing out, conducting just end-of-season Wagner performances in 2015 and 2016 (we have no Manchester or Salford dates for these).

Italian conductor Gianluca Marciano makes his Opera North debut with Verdi's La Traviata in November (a new production by the gifted Alessandro Talevi), and Oliver von Dohnanyi takes performances in 2015. Laurence Cummings conducts a new production by Tim Albery of Monteverdi's The Coronation Of Poppea, and there's a revival of The Bartered Bride, directed by Daniel Slater. March brings a new Marriage Of Figaro (director Jo Davies), when Alexander Shelley conducts his first opera for the company.

The Bridgewater Hall choral season begins with Bach's B Minor Mass, performed by The English Concert on September 26. …
